Owasso is the one of the FASTEST growing communities in Oklahoma.
Owasso was first known as the Elm Creek Settlement, located in the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation.
On January 24, 1900, the name Elm Creek community’s name was officially changed to Owasso.
Owasso is an Indian word meaning “the end” or “turn around”.
No other U.S. City bares the name “Owasso”.
On March 26, 1904, Owasso became a town under the Indian Territory of the Cherokee Nation.
When Owasso was chartered as a city in September, 1972, the population was little over 3,500.
Owasso’s 1st Church Building was finished on February 24, 1905…The First Baptist Church.
The 1st Train rolled into Elm Creek (Owasso) on November 1, 1899.
Owasso’s population is apx. 29,000, however, Owasso’s school district serves nearly 49,000.
Owasso Public School Facts:
The Owasso Public School District served 9,000 students during 2009-2010 school year.
The Pride of Owasso Band marched in the Rose Parade on January 1, 2004.
The Owasso 8th grade Odyssey of the Mind team brought home the first-ever world title for the city when they were named OM World Champions in 2003.
